We got called out by an elderly couple who bought this house In Worsley
, Salford,
5 years ago and the Travertinefloor was in this condition already. Worsley is a suburb in Greater Manchester
, Historically part of Lancashire
, there is evidence of Roman and Anglo-Saxon activity, including two Roman roads. The completion in 1761 of the Bridgewater Canal allowed Worsley to expand from a small village of cottage industries to an important town based upon cotton manufacture, iron-working, brick-making and extensive coal mining.
Our customers didn't know that these tiles and grout can be cleaned to a completely different state. Fortunately their friend who had used our services before saw their floor and recommended us.
I did a tester on these Travertine Tilesand Grout while I was doing our free home survey service and it wasn't long until we were booked in.
For cleaning these travertine tiles and grout I used our strong alkaline cleaner which doesn't damage natural stone or any other tiles and grout but breaks down dirt with ease. I sprayed the cleaning solution on this natural stone floor and left it to dwell in for about 10 minutes and then followed up by scrubbing tiles and grout with the hand scrubbing brush. After scrubbing I removed all the soiled water from the travertine stone floor with wet vacuum and gave it another rinse. It was a time consuming job as it was unfilled travertine and almost every stone tile had tens of deep holes which had to be cleaned one by one very carefully.
Once the chemical cleaning was done on the tiles and grout I moved on to polishing the travertine stone tiles with our burnishing pad system. As normal I started with 400 grit fitted under the rotary machine and pad by pad moved up to 3000 grit which left a nice and smooth finish on these travertine tiles. For each pad I used little water as a lubricant, all soiled water got removed and rinsed after each pad with the wet vacuum. After last pad it was extremely important to make sure there is no water in the holes, otherwise there would be damp in the stone tiles on the next day. Once the cleaning and polishing was done on these travertine stone tiles and grout I left it to dry till the next day.
Next day on the arrival I quickly checked the stone tiles and grout with my damp tester. Fortunately there was no damp on the travertine floor and I had a green light to start sealing. For sealingI used Matt Natural Impregnating Sealer which doesn't enhance the colours in the natural stone. I used it because customer wanted to keep the travertine floor as light as possible which is normal after they had to put up with this dirty dark floor for 5 years.
These tiles and grout took 3 generous coats of the sealer and after each coat the sealer residue got wiped off from the stone tiles. Sealing also was more complicated then normally as I had to get sealer into holes in these travertine stone tiles.
