This time we got a call to restore this beautiful Natural Stone TravertineTiled Floor in Hyde , Greater Manchester. The old Cheshire town of Hyde is home to one of Tameside's oldest building, the cruck-framed 13th century Newton Hall. Neighbouring Longdendale, on the fringes of the Peak District, comprises the villages of Broadbottom, Mottram, Hollingworth and Longdendale.
Travertineis one of the most popular types of natural-stone flooring for many reasons, including its beauty and durability.Travertine has a beauty and timeless appeal that’s hard to match. It has been used in architecture and design since the Roman times when it was used in the construction of steps, temples, monuments, and amphitheaters like the Colosseum, which is made almost entirely from travertine.
Although being beautiful flooring choice, it has it's problems. Firstly the shine won't last forever and secondly it's acid sensitive stone.
All these problems can be solved by polishing the floor with diamond burnishing pads and that's exactly what we explained to our customer who was keen to restore it's original beauty.
For Burnishing (cleaning and polishing) we still used our diamond burnishing pads system.
We started off on these travertine tiles with 200 grit diamond burnishing pad, with some water as a lubricant. The first 400 grit removes the old sealer/wax off the stone floor and removes any scraches or acid stains
( Etch Marks
) in Travertine.
When whole floor was burnished with the first pad, then all the soiled water got removed with wet vacuum. Next we moved on to 800 grit which is finer then the 400 grit, but rough enough still to break down layers of ingrained dirt. This got followed up with the application of a fine 1500 grit pad, which started to smooth down the rough areas of the surface to prepare the floor for a final polish with an even finer burnishing pad later on. When polishing was done all grout lines got scrubbed with our grout brush.
After the last pad, floor got rinsed once more.
All cleaning finished, we had to fill in missing bits of grout. They got filled in with flexible grout and then the floor was left to dry till the next day.
When we returned on the next day to finish off the Travertine stone tiled floor restoration , a damp tester got used to make sure there was no damp left in tiles and grout. This Travertine floor had to be completely dry in order to seal.
After sealing we also completed a sealer durability tester which was success and we were finished. Our customer was over the moon with the finish and vowed to recommend us to friends.
