Our customer had a problem with his bathroom ceramic
wall tiles and grout, also silicone sealant was mouldy and peeling away in places which meant water was getting behind tiles. Luckily he found us from googlesearch and called us over to his apartment next to River Irwell in Spinningfields
, Manchester City Centre.Elegant Spinningfields is the city’s financial centre and a popular destination for entertainment and shopping. Office workers pour into cocktail bars and chain restaurants in the evening, while locals seeking culture head to the imposing Manchester Opera House
for musicals and concerts. Also in the area is the People's History Museum, focusing on Manchester’s working-class history.
On arrival it was clear that some of the grout was chipped and silicone sealant was peeling away and they both caused damp to get behind tiles. Damp behind tiles is very dangerous as it disconnects tiles from wall by making the wall soft and then tiles start to move. So we told customer straight away some tiles need to be taken off, dried from behind, rebedded and regrouted. Our customer liked what he was hearing and booked us in to complete the tile repairs.
First we started with showerarea walls cleaning but we had to be careful, as some tiles were loose and grout missing. So we filled gaps in grout and silicone with some clear silicone for cleaning process. After gaps were filled we started cleaning by spraying our alkaline cleaner on tiles and grout. When cleaner had breaken down dirt for couple of minutes it was followed by careful scrubbing with grout brush and medium strenght scrubbing pad. After scrubbing all walls got rinsed down and dried out with our heatgun.
Cleaning finished I started removing the loose tiles, there was about three tiles which were loose, so they got removed, wall dried from behind and then rebedded. Everything went well till I started removing the silicone sealant which also removed all the bottom row tiles and made my job much harder instantly. this meant repeating the same drying and rebedding process I used before. After drying the wall behind it is important to scratch the wall surface, this gives tile adhesive somewhere to hold onto. If you rebedd them on straight wall, you run a risk of repeating the job in future.
Once all tiles were in place we dried the adhesive again with heat gun and then grouted all that was required.
All tile repairs done, I started sealingthe grout with our impregnating grout sealer spray. It is an effective and quick sealing method. Once all grout was sealed I had to remove all excess from tiles with soft cottong cloth. After sealing it was time to apply the silicone sealant. We used our regular high quality water resistant silicone sealant. When Applying the sealant it's important to press it into the grout lines, otherwise you will soon get same problems again. Another tip is to fill the bath with water, so it will strech the silicone with full weight.
