RESTORING THE BEAUTY OF A VICTORIAN TILED FLOOR FROM 1890

Quality Tile Care • Aug 27, 2024

Our client recently made an incredible discovery when they removed an old, dirty carpet from their home. Beneath the layers of grime lay a stunning original Victorian tiled floor from 1890, hidden for who knows how long. While the tiles were still intact, they were covered in carpet glue, adhesive, paint, and years of accumulated dirt. The floor’s true beauty was obscured, but we were excited to take on the challenge of bringing it back to life.

The Restoration Process - Step 1: Deep Cleaning

The first task was to deep clean the area using professional tile and stone cleaning products. We used a rotary machine and wet vacuum to lift the years of grime from the surface. Each tile was then meticulously cleaned by hand to effectively remove any stubborn paint, adhesive, and other residues. This step was crucial to revealing the floor’s original colors and intricate patterns.

Step 2: Drying Time

After the deep cleaning, it was essential to allow the floor to dry completely before proceeding to the next stage. We left the floor to dry for a week, ensuring that any residual moisture evaporated, which is especially important when working with historic materials.

Step 3: Sealing the Floor

Once dry, we sealed the floor with a breathable, color-enhancing impregnating sealer. This type of sealer was chosen because it not only enhances the natural colors of the tiles, bringing them back to their former glory, but also leaves a natural matt finish that complements the Victorian aesthetic. Most importantly, the sealer is breathable, which is vital for older floors to prevent moisture buildup and potential damage over time.

The Stunning Transformation

The transformation of this Victorian floor was nothing short of amazing. The colors were vibrant once more, and the intricate patterns of the tiles were fully visible and protected for years to come. The floor now not only looks beautiful but is also safeguarded against future wear and tear.
