Chester
is arguably the richest city in Cheshire
and Britain for archaeological and architectural treasures preserved to this day from the time of the Roman occupation. With its city walls, the largest Roman Amphitheatre in Britain, the oldest racecourse and also with the 1000 year old cathedral, Chester is deffinitely the place to visit!
Chester
also has a good variety of restaurants and bars and this is the reason we were called out there. We were needed in one of the popular retaurant/bars in Chester, where they were concerned about their now dull and old looking encausticcement tiles. We did a quick tester for them and agreed to work over the nights, so the business could still go on.
For Cleaning these encaustictiles we used our alkaline cleaner and diamond burnishing pads system. We started off with 400 grit and the alkaline cleaner. The first 400 grit removes the old sealer and scratch marks off the tiled floor and cleaner will remove any dirt from cracks and holes. When the whole encustic cement tile floor was burnished, then all the soiled water got removed with wet vacuum.
Next, we moved on to the Medium 800 grit pad which is less coarse than the 400 grit, but rough enough still to break down layers of ingrained dirt. This got followed up with the application of a Fine 1500 grit pad, which started to smooth down the rough areas of the stone surface to prepare the tile floor for a final polish with an even finer burnishing pad later on. After the last pad, the floor got rinsed once more.
After the last pad all cracks and holes in tiles got filled in and loose tiles got fixed in place. All finished for the night, floor was left to dry till the next day.
When we returned on the next day to finish off the cement floor restoration, we used a damp tester to make sure there was no damp left in tiles. Floor has to be completely dry in order to seal.We also discovered few more unfilled holes which we quickly filled in.
Final polish was followed up by sealing the travertine floor with 2 coats of high quality colour enhancing solvent based impregnating sealer. Impregnating sealer penetrates in the surface and allows it to breathe. Impregnating sealer Performs well in wet areas including bathrooms, wetrooms, commercial properties and swimming pool surrounds. It's also suitable on floors that have no damp proof course. Each coat had to dwell in for about 15 - 20 minutes and then all the residue got wiped off from the stone tiles with soft cotton cloths.
As you can see, the floor was much improved and looked lively again. Main thing ofcourse was our client was happy!
